“Colour is a power which directly influences the soul,” artist Wassily Kandinsky asserts. He experimented with color and form to excite emotions and spirituality via the senses. A pioneer of Abstract art, as well as an art theorist and teacher, he draws this analogy to explain: “Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.” He is known to have experienced synesthesia, a joined perception of sound and color, and his groundbreaking imagery, replete with geometric and biomorphic shapes, emphatic lines, and a vivid color palette, is a symphony expressing his innermost self.
